Estonian-Ukrainian Defense Collaboration Delivers Tactical Precision Upgrade
FRDM GROUP, a Ukrainian company specializing in combat drone platforms, and Estonia’s Threod Systems, a provider of electro-optical payloads, UAVs and launcher systems technologies, have completed a joint development effort that enhances precision targeting capabilities on the battlefield.
This international collaboration was initiated at the First Business Forum in Kyiv, held on April 3rd–4th 2024, co-organized by the Kaitseministeerium / Ministry of Defence of Estonia, Defence Estonia Cluster, and the Estonian Defence and Aerospace Industry Association. The forum brought together Ukrainian and Estonian defense companies to explore practical opportunities for collaboration in support of urgent defense needs.
At the core of this achievement is the Ukrainian R-34-T multirotor UAV, a combat-proven platform developed in close cooperation with the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Engineered for laser target designation to support precision-guided artillery and aviation munitions, the drone has undergone a comprehensive series of trials and is now operationally ready to support missions on the front lines.
Through this partnership, Threod Systems’ high-precision laser targeting payloads have been adapted and integrated into the R-34-T, transforming a capable UAV into a force multiplier. The development introduces a rare and highly valuable capability in the multirotor class, enabling precise target marking in complex environments while maintaining mobility and survivability in contested airspace. R-34-T is the first Ukrainian drone featuring laser target designation capability, setting a new benchmark in Ukrainian UAV innovation.
This development reflects the power of international defense cooperation during wartime. It also underscores how forums like the First Business Forum in Kyiv can spark tangible innovation through partnership. Both companies thank the Kaitseministeerium / Ministry of Defence of Estonia, Defence Estonia Cluster, and the Estonian Defence and Aerospace Industry Association for facilitating the forum where this cooperation began. Special thanks also go to all defense professionals from Ukraine and Estonia who contributed their expertise, trust, and commitment to advancing security through innovation.
